Gratitude Writing Improves Mental Health

20-07-2025

Science proves that gratitude helps significantly during mental health recovery.

The first randomized controlled trial, supported by the Expanding the Science and Practice of Gratitude Project run by the Greater Good Science Center with funding from the John Templeton Foundation, showed noticeably better psychotherapy results in the group, which expressed gratitude in writing.

Participants in the gratitude condition wrote letters expressing gratitude to others, whereas those in the expressive writing condition wrote their deepest thoughts and feelings related to stressful experiences. About 4 weeks as well as 12 weeks after the conclusion of the writing intervention, participants in the gratitude condition reported significantly better mental health than those in the expressive and control conditions, whereas those in the expressive and control conditions did not differ significantly.

These results prove that gratitude even for the smallest gains positively rewires brain functioning, helping people in mental health recovery.
