
Dry January Led to Better Sleep, Saving Money and Losing Weight
New research shows significant benefits of giving up alcohol for a month.
A new study from the University of Sussex has found that taking part in Dry January – a month without alcohol – helps people regain control over their drinking, boost their energy levels, improve their skin and lose weight. What’s more, participants continue to drink less even months after the initiative has ended.
The study, led by University of Sussex psychologist Dr Richard de Visser, involved more than 800 people. The results show that even by August, participants were still drinking less than they had before the experiment. The number of drinking days per week fell from 4.3 to 3.3 days, and the average number of units consumed fell from 8.6 to 7.1 units per day.
Dr de Visser noted that “just giving up alcohol for a month helps people reduce their consumption in the long term.” Thus, 93% of participants reported a feeling of satisfaction, 88% - saved money, 71% began to sleep better, and 58% - lost weight.
